MCI Notifies Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order 2021

Recently, the Central Government, by way of the powers provided under the provision of section 16 (1) and (2), read with the provision of section 25 (3) of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act 2016 has passed an Order on 25.02.2021 to amend the provisions of the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Order, 2020. Further, the said rules will now be known as the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order 2021.

Also, it shall be noted that the said amendment was made by the Central Government after consulting the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), and same has been done in the interest of general public.

Concept of the Bureau of Indian Standards

The term BIS or Bureau of Indian Standards means the National Standard Body of India, which was established under the provisions of the BIS Act 2016. The main reason behind its establishment is the harmonious development of the activities concerning Standardisation, Marking, and Quality Certification of Goods and matters incidental thereto.

Further, BIS has been engaged in providing various tangible and traceable benefits to our Indian economy in the ways as follows:

  • By providing safe, reliable, and quality goods;
  • By minimising the health hazards to consumers;
  • By promoting substitutes of Imports and Exports;
  • By controlling over proliferation of varieties;

Also, it shall be noted that the same is possible only through standardization, certification, and testing.

Key Provisions of Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order 2021

The key provision of the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order 2021 is that the said act will come into force from 01.04.2022 instead of 01.04.2021. Further, it shall be noted that the said substitution has been made under sub – paragraph (2) of the paragraph 1 of the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Order 2020.

In a nutshell, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is national body of standards that deals with the harmonious development of the activities concerning Standardisation, Marking, and Quality Certification of Goods. The same provides several tangible and traceable benefits to our Indian economy.

Also, it shall be noted that the main amendment made by way of the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order 2021 was to extend the date of implementation from the previous 01.04.2021 to 01.04.2022.
