The Bureau of Indian standards were set up through the BIS Act of 2016. The bureau was set up to ensure proper standardisation, quality assurance and marking of the products. By setting up pre-defined standards, the BIS ensures that a citizen of the country receives quality products that are safe and reliable. This would significantly reduce the health-related hazards, boost the country’s export, and provide import substitutions. This can be achieved through timely testing, certification and maintaining high standards. In this blog, we shall focus on BIS Registration Process for Textile Products.

The textile industry is versatile and is key to various industries. Its necessity is felt in main economic activities such as Shipping, sports, aerospace, agriculture, defence, healthcare etc. For all such activities, nonwoven fabrics are used. According to reports, BIS have plans to introduce standards for Technical textile products- these products have limited life but are ultra-durable.

These textiles can be categorised into the following

Agrotech: Agrotech textile is used for making equipment for agriculture and its supplementary tasks. This includes Shade-nets, Anti-hail nets, Mulch-mats, Fishing nets, Crop-covers, and Bird protection nets. Etc.

Buildtech: Textiles for build tech industries are required for the apparatus required for construction industries. Some examples of this are Canopies & Awnings, Architectural membranes, Scaffolding nets, canvas tarpaulins, and Floor & wall coverings.

Clothtech: These are standardised goods utilised by the garment/ apparel industries. These are used in places such as shoe laces, elastic tapes, umbrellas interlinings, and zip fasteners.

Geotech: Geotech works i.e the work related to soil, rock, groundwater etc., also require tech-textile for geogrids, geocomposites, and geonets.

Hometech: Technical textile products are utilised in various household items such as mattress and pillow components, carpet cloth, stuff toys, blinds etc.

Indutech: Industrial spaces also require high-quality standardised products. These textiles are utilised in the form of conveyor belts, printer ribbons, paper-making fabrics, and filtration products.

Meditech: Use of Technical textiles in the medical industry is essential as products for surgical use. Such masks and gowns are made from this material. Apart from this, this product for personal use, such as diapers, sanitary napkins, contact lenses, etc., is also made from this.

Mobiltech: Automobiles are one of the soaring industries throughout the world. Products such as Seat belts, airbags, seat upholstery, nylon tyre cords and helmets also require technical textile.

Oekotech: the various process of environment conservation and environment engineering require such textiles for various purposes such as recycling and waste disposal.

Packtech: Packing products are also made of high-quality textiles and are utilised in leno bags, wrapping fabrics, jute sacks, etc.

Protech: Technical textiles are utilised in protective gears such as bulletproof jackets, Fire retardant fabrics, chemical protection, and industrial clothing.

Sports Tech: Sports equipment such as nets, artificial turfs, artificial turfs, tents, swimwear and sports shoe components etc. are made with high-quality textiles.

Why should manufacturers complete BIS Registration Process for Textile Products?

Ensures Quality: BIS mark is only granted when the product has passed a specific criterion. So when a product bears the BIS mark, it automatically ensures the customer that it is of superior quality.

Provides Authenticity to the product: BIS product gives the customer a sense of assurance. The standards to which the BIS subjects these products ensure that the products are highly reliable and shall give a quality performance.

Safeguards environment: The products that require BIS certification norms prohibit using certain harsh chemicals and materials under its guidelines. This ensures that while disposal of these products, the environment is not harmed.

Lab- Testing for quality inspection: in order for a product to receive a BIS certification, it is subjected to all lot tests, which can only be carried out under the BIS registered laboratories. This makes that only high-standard products reach out to customers.

The following documents are required for BIS Registration Process for Textile Products:

  • Trade License
  • Registration certificate of the company
  • Residential proof and Identification details of Companies owners, partners and directors
  • Certificate of incorporation of the company
  • A partnership deed needs to be furnished in case of a partnership firm
  • GST Certificate
  • MSME Registration Certificate
  • Electricity bill’s Copy
  • Proof of Trademark Registration
  • Details of machinery used in textile manufacturing
  • Layout plan of the factory
  • Flowchart production process
  • Details of machinery being used in productions, this document must also contain information about technicians, raw materials and test equipment.
  • In the case of overseas producers, all the necessary documents of an authorised Indian representative must be submitted.

Following are the steps for BIS Registration Process for Textile Products

  • The applicant must submit form 1. This is needed to submit with the BIS’s registration fee. This application must be given to the BIS branch under whose jurisdiction the production unit is situated,
  • All relevant documents as discussed above must be submitted along with the application.
  • All the documents submitted by the applicant shall be checked, and if the evaluation is successful, the form shall be forwarded for further scrutiny.
  • The BIS shall conduct a preliminary inspection of the product. This shall be carried out within 15 days post the application submission. The test shall ensure that the applicant’s product meets all the standards, quality and checks set forth by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
  • The sample must be submitted to a Lab recognised by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
  • BIS license[1] for the product shall only be granted once the product can pass all the standards as per the regulations. The validity of this license shall be for one year. This license can be renewed yearly as long as the standards are maintained. The application fee keeps on varying. The latest fees are updated on the BIS website regularly.

 

Conclusion:

BIS certification of a product automatically shows the quality of the product. That’s the reason why the bureau enlists over 900 products in the regulations, as the BIS-certified product is of superior quality, and is safe for the customers and environment. Therefore it is necessary that a massive industry such as textile must also have BIS standards for its products, especially Technical Textiles that should be of high quality.
