The term BIS Certification Scheme denotes one of the largest schemes in the world that permits the licensees to use the popular Indian Standards Institute or ISI mark on their products. Concept of BIS Certification in India

To promote consumer welfare and provide speedy redressal of public grievances, BIS or Bureau of has established a separate department that completely deals with public and consumer welfare.

Concept of Different BIS Certification Schemes

The BIS Certification Scheme denotes the world’s largest scheme that holds over 26500 licenses and includes more than 900 items or products. Further, this scheme permits licensees or manufacturers to use ISI or Indian Standards Institute marks on their respective products. Therefore, ISI Mark acts as a sense of assurance for consumers that a particular produced or manufactured product has the best quality.

Also, BIS provides FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme) that allows the producers or manufacturers located overseas to use BIS Standard Mark. Presently, the Bureau of Indian Standards has granted over 350 certificates to about 50 Indian Standards in 40 different countries.

Normal Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers Scheme

Under this particular scheme, the applicant needs to submit an Application for Certification, together with the required documents and specified fee. Further, the BIS Officers will conduct a preliminary examination of the premise in which the goods or products are manufactured. After that, the collected samples will be sent to the authorised laboratories.

If the goods pass all the standards prescribed, then the officer designated will issue the certificate for BIS Registration. Lastly, this process will need around six months’ time, starting from the date of filing the application.

Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers Scheme

Just like its name, the simplified procedure is one of the easiest and hassle-free way to acquire BIS Certification in India. Under this method, the applicant needs to furnish the reports of his/her sample product received from a BIS authorised lab, together with the application for BIS Registration.

After that, the designated BIS Officer will verify the reports furnished, and if satisfied, he/she will conduct a further inspection of the premise to confirm that all the protocols and directions are duly followed.

Lastly, if the designated BIS Officer is satisfied, he/she will issue the Certificate of Registration within a period of 30 days, starting from the date of submission of application.

Tatkal Scheme

The term “Tatkal Scheme” denotes one of the different BIS Certification Scheme, wherein the authorities will process the application for registration within a period of 30 days, starting from the date of submitting the application. Therefore, under this scheme, the authorities process the application for registration on a priority basis to abide by the strict time rules.

Eco Mark Scheme

The term “Eco Mark Scheme” denotes the certificate of quality given to the Environmental-friendly products.  For obtaining registration under this scheme, the manufacturer or the producer needs to excel and clear every prescribed test and obey the standards.

Also, it shall be considerate to note that the procedure for obtaining the Eco Mark Scheme is somehow similar to the process prescribed for Domestic Manufacturer Scheme.

Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme

Under this specific scheme, the manufacturer/producer or the applicant who is situated outside India has the opportunity to use the BIS standard mark on his/her goods.

Further, a period of 6 months is required under BIS Certification Scheme.
